The Pulitzer Prize

Every year since 1917, the Pulitzer Prize has been awarded for extraordinary contributions in arts and letters and journalism. A special board decides who will receive the awards, which are given out by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, a respected school in New York City. The Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher. Some famous people who have won a Pulitzer Prize include playwright Tennessee Williams, poet Robert Frost, novelists Alice Walker and Cormac McCarthy, and former president John F. Kennedy, who was honored for his book Profiles in Courage. The name Pulitzer is often mispronounced. The correct way to say it is “Pull it, sir.”
